femanist: I know David Bowie is all over Tumblr today (or I guess yesterday) because of his birthday, but I would like to pay particular homage to this pop hero as not only one of our kings of pop, but of gender binary subversion (it sounded way more romantic in my head). Anyway, Bowie’s costumes and performance style crosses traditional lines of gender binary and asserts that gender expression has nothing to do with biological sex and vice versa. Most importantly, he did so in a very big, public way. Stars like Bowie who create gender-bending personas and personal style illustrate how much gender is nothing more than construct of our society and work to break down gendered discrimination and inequality. Hooray for David Bowie!! THIS ^^^
